How to choose the right enterprise mobility management tool

It’s almost redundant to refer to a “mobile workforce,” because so much of the workforce today is using mobile devices in some fashion. Managing this large and expanding environment continues to be a huge challenge for IT, and for a growing number of organizations, enterprise mobility management (EMM) is the solution of choice.

Recent industry research shows the expected growth in demand for EMM products, which typically incorporate mobile device management (MDM), mobile application management (MAM), mobile security and mobile content management. An April 2017 report from The Radicati Group forecasts that worldwide revenues for the EMM market will total $1.8 billion by year-end 2017. This will increase to more than $3.3 billion by year-end 2021, for an average annual growth rate of 18% over the next four years.

Beyond MDM: Today’s EMM suites add sophisticated capabilities

The global workforce is more mobile than ever. And for many organizations that are trying to control the burgeoning mobile device and app environment, deploying enterprise mobility management (EMM) systems has become standard operating procedure.

“Mobility continues to transform how employees undertake work, and EMM technology is an important component in the successful execution of digital transformation initiatives,” says Adam Holtby, research analyst for enterprise mobility and productivity at Ovum.

Originally called mobile device management (MDM) software, EMM products continue to evolve and now offer features that go well beyond device management, Holtby says. “Being able to manage a broad device estate via EMM is a compelling proposition for organizations,” he says. “Next-generation policy-management capabilities and the ability to derive meaningful context about not only the devices being used by an employee base, but also about the employees themselves, can be transformative for organizations.”

Machine learning proves its worth to business

Machine learning couldn’t be hotter. A type of artificial intelligence that enables computers to learn to perform tasks and make predictions without explicit programming, machine learning has caught fire among the hip tech set, but remains a somewhat futuristic concept for most enterprises. But thanks to technological advances and emerging frameworks, machine learning may soon hit the mainstream.

Consulting firm Deloitte expects to see a big increase in the use and adoption of machine learning in the coming year. This is in large part because the technology is becoming much more pervasive. The firm’s latest research shows that worldwide more than 300 million smartphones, or more than one-fifth of units sold in 2017, will have machine learning capabilities on board.
